HESFB Extends Loan Application to End of October

Thursday, October 1, 2020

The Higher Education Students Financing Board (HESFB) commonly known as “The board” has again extended its deadline for the student loan applications for the AY2020/21. The new dates are October 15th, and 31st, 2020 for both degree and diploma applicants respectively.

This was declared through a Facebook live address by CPA Michael Wanyama the Executive Director HESFB, moderated by Bob Ambrose Nuwagira, the Head of Communications. The live chat was informative and interactive as 929people were reached; 449views and 458engagements were made by 3:00PM.

Following numerous complaints and appeals from public and students for a new deadline extension, HESFB has been necessitated to make reconsiderations to the earlier set deadline which was September 30, 2020 for degree and October 15, 2020 for diploma applicants.

The Executive Director recounted that the board opened up for applications of the 7th cohort of the higher education students’ loans applications in May 2020. The initial deadline was July 31st, 2020 which was subsequently extended to August 31st 2020 as many higher institutions had taken long in admission process due to resultant effect of Covid-19 on the work force.

Because of this the Board extended the deadline September 30th and October 15th, 2020 for both degree and diploma applicants respectively. However through the period, CPA Wanyama says that they have been receiving appeals from applicants, the public and institutions to have a new extension due to various challenges to the application process.

Among the challenges highlighted include that the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) had not conducted the admission process and Kyambogo University had also not yet released admission lists. Further still, applicants in border students could not travel to the different offices to complete application process and some schools hadn’t opened thus lack of required documents.

Informed by this, The Board considered the appeals and the new deadlines were established. Kyambogo university committing to release students’ admissions starting October 1st 2020 and the JAB confirming to release admissions on October 16th 2020.

The ED also warned applicants against fraudsters who could claim to “fix students onto the scheme at a fee” and clarified that the Loan Scheme follows a transparent process with a computerised system at the heart of loan processing.

Since inception, HESFB has awarded loans to 10,041 beneficiaries (8,616 undergraduate degree and 1,425 undergraduate diploma to purse 130 degree programmes and 76 undergraduate diploma courses mainly in science, technology, engineering and math (stem) programmes apart from learners with special needs who can access loans to pursue business and humanities programmes.
